Following my HS graduation in 1965, my Father who worked for Ohio Oil Co, now Marathon was transferred to the Chicago area. A tremendous opportunity for him but it completely uprooted me and what vague plans I had for my future. At my new home I attended extension classes in the evenings and worked at Simmons Mattress Factory during the day. But my heart just was not into it.
Not grasping my options I abruptly enlisted in the Army, the thought of being drafted did not appeal to me. Big mistake. By choice I selected being an infantryman and was headed to Vietnam. Where I survived two tours maturing in an environment where I grew up real fast. Returning from the Nam I spent 10 Months at Ft. Riley Kansas where realizing the benefits of higher education I took numerous classes from KSU.
Upon being discharged from the Army I couldn't bear returning to Ohio. I moved to Phoenix and attended Phoenix College (AA) and Arizona State University (BS).
Then to grad school at California State University Sacramento (MA) and University Of California Santa Barbara (MFA).
I've worked in museums, galleries, installed major sculptures for municipalities and private collectors, curated exhibits and worked with private collections.
I am now retired. My Teresa and I are now living our dream at the foot of the Vermillion Cliffs in Kanab, Utah.
How lucky and fortunate can you be?
In my senior year I had last period study hall (whoever came up with that scheduling slot?) that was overlooked by Coast Scrivner. Bored and restless I forged a pass to go to the Art rooms for some special project. This went on for months, thinking that the coach and Mr. Clark would not cross paths. Well a couple of weeks before graduation they talked and I was busted. Coach was very angry, like red in the face angry and somewhat scary. Mr. Clark was disappointed in me and I lost face in his eyes. Lesson learned, I let my one favorite instructor down and somehow escaped getting my young ass kicked by the Coach.
